Coggin College of Business Internship Course

Students Seeking Internships

There are two types of internships in the Coggin College of Business: Academic and Non-Academic. For either type, it is the student's responsibility to find and secure their own internship.

Academic Internships

Students may be able to receive academic credit for an internship that is directly related to their major. Each major has its own criteria in order for the student to receive academic credit for the internship. Please take note of these important internship details:

  • Credit is not given for past internships nor current jobs. The internship course must be taken concurrently with your internship, which must be a new position for you.
  • Each major/minor internship course has specific guidelines. Make sure your internship meets those requirements, including supervised hours worked and compensation in the form of a salary or stipend. Refer to the Criteria & Prerequisites tab for more information.
  • 九色视频 registration deadlines apply. Follow the for the semester of your internship.
  • Internships must be conducted on-site at a designated business location. Remote/virtual internships and those based at residential addresses are not allowed.

Employer Verification Letter

Once you accept your internship offer, Coggin needs to verify key details. Please contact your employer and request an employment verification letter (on company letterhead) that includes the following:

  • Internship Dates: your start and end dates.
  • Expected Work Hours: the number of hours you plan to work (either weekly or total hours), confirming the amount meets the requirements for your major.
  • Supervisor Contact Information: supervisor’s name, office address, email, and phone number.
  • Pay: the compensation amount you will receive (e.g., hourly wage or stipend).
  • Internship Responsibilities: a general description of your key responsibilities during the internship.

While you're corresponding with your supervisor regarding these details, you may also choose to discuss the goals you will include in your application (see Goals tab).

Note: An employer verification letter is different from an offer letter. However, if your offer letter includes all of the details above, you may submit the offer letter instead.

Internship SMART Goals

As part of your application, you will submit at least three goals for your internship experience.  At least one of these goals should be related to your major. The application will ask you to use the  framework to create effective goals:

S - Specific: Each goal should be clear and well-defined.
M - Measurable: You should be able to track your progress or know when each goal is achieved.
A - Achievable: Each goal should be realistic and attainable given your resources and constraints.
R - Relevant: Each goal should matter to you and align with your broader objectives.
T - Time-bound: Set a deadline or timeframe for each goal to create urgency and structure.

Note: Examples of appropriate SMART goals coming soon.

FAQ's

We understand questions can arise during the Coggin internship course application process.  The frequently asked questions below may be helpful, but if your question is not answered, contact us at coggin.internships@unf.edu

When should I submit my Coggin internship course application?  The application for the internship course opens a few weeks after the current semester begins. Once you've secured your internship, apply as soon as possible. The application will close during the first week of the semester in which you're taking the internship course.

What if I don't have a course prerequisite?  If you do not meet one or more of the course prerequisites for your major/minor internship course, but you would still like to receive academic credit, you must meet with your academic advisor to discuss a Waiver of College Policy form.

  • After the waiver form has been submitted and reviewed, you must provide the outcome of waiver to the Coggin internship instructor at coggin.internships@unf.edu
  • Your application will not be processed without waiver decision.
  • If the waiver is denied, you will not be eligible for academic internship credit for the semester.

How do I determine my internship goals? Internship goals should reflect your individual interests and career path. If you need support while crafting your goals for the application, consider reaching out to:

  • Your internship supervisor
  • A professor in your major or minor
  • Your academic advisor
  • The Coggin internship instructor

These resources can help you create meaningful, personalized goals for a successful internship experience.

What Happens to My Internship Application After I Submit Online?

Once you submit your Academic Internship Application, congratulations! You have successfully completed the first step, but there are a few more to go:

  • Check your 九色视频 email account. You will receive an email confirmation from the Coggin internship instructor with your application status once it has been reviewed.
  • Register for the internship course yourself in myWings for the designated term.
  • Complete the course assignments and enjoy your internship!

Non-Academic Internships

Non-Academic internships are similar to academic internships but without the academic component. The internship timeline, compensation, and job requirements are all determined by the student and the employer.  There is no need to submit this application for an internship that is not for credit.

Internship or Part-Time Job?

Internships are usually formal programs within organizations whose primary purpose is to offer practical work experience. Internships improve resumes by giving students opportunities to gain professional skills and explore new industries. Would-be interns should evaluate internship programs carefully, to see if those programs offer the training they desire.

The main difference between an internship and a part-time job is that internships include specific learning objectives. In other words, a student is deliberately seeking new knowledge or skills in a particular industry. The internship ought to enhance your career objective.

If you have further questions about whether or not your position qualifies as an internship, please contact the Coggin internship instructor at coggin.internships@unf.edu
