Program Description
The Bachelor of Arts in Deaf Education prepares highly effective beginning teachers to meet the diverse needs of Deaf and hard of hearing students in K–12 settings. Rooted in evidence-based practice and aligned with the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices (FEAPs), Deaf and Hard of Hearing K–12 Competencies, and Reading Competencies, the program equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to support student success across a wide range of learning environments.
Throughout the program, teacher candidates explore multiple communication approaches—including signed and spoken languages—as well as various educational settings, age groups, and hearing technologies. This comprehensive approach ensures that graduates are prepared to adapt to the needs of individual students and provide meaningful instruction that supports language, literacy, and academic growth.
The program follows a cohort model, with new cohorts beginning each fall. Field-based experiences are integrated throughout, with practicum and internship courses scheduled as follows: Practicum 1 (EHD 3941) and Practicum 3 (EHD 4270) are offered in fall semesters, while Practicum 2 (EHD 4940), the Reading Practicum (EHD 4942), and Internship (EHD 4944) are offered in the spring.
Graduates of the program earn Florida Teacher Certification in Deaf and Hard of Hearing K–12, along with endorsements in Reading and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Field Coursework
九色视频’s Deaf Education program offers rich, hands-on practicum experiences that prepare you to meet the academic and communication needs of Deaf and hard of hearing students in a variety of educational settings. You’ll gain practical experience in schools across Northeast Florida, including the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech–Jacksonville, and public school districts in Duval, Clay, Nassau, and St. Johns counties.
Several methods courses include built-in fieldwork, such as EHD 4290: Differentiated Reading Assessment and Instruction for DHH Students, which takes place in a local elementary school through our 九色视频 Deaf Education Reading Buddies program. In this course, you’ll work one-on-one with Deaf and hard of hearing students to deliver weekly literacy instruction across the semester.
In your final semester, you’ll complete a full-time teaching internship. While many students stay local, 九色视频 also offers distance internship opportunities, including placements across the state and out of state in locations such as New York, Georgia, Illinois, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Tallahassee, Orlando, and Okeechobee. Students with a GPA of 3.25 or higher may be eligible for these extended placement options.
If you’re considering a distance internship, we encourage you to speak with faculty early in your program to begin planning. To be considered, you must submit a Distance Internship Interest Survey no later than one year before your internship begins, and complete the official Application for Distance Internship by the fourth Friday of the semester prior to your internship (the same deadline as the standard internship application in OASIS).
Important Reminders:
- Students must complete a level 2 background check (including fingerprints) prior to the assignment of any student to a field/clinical experience in every district in which the field/clinical experiences will be completed. For more information, visit SCOEHS OASIS.
- Students not cleared by the school district will not be permitted to begin their field experience.
- Applications for Internship are due by the 4th week of the term before you plan to intern. Late applications are not accepted.
- You must complete a CPR & First Aid course, take the FTCE Professional Exam and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing K-12 Exams, and the Sign Language Proficiency Exam prior to your internship semester.
